Writing Religiously: Writing with Music

I write with music playing in the background:
  • Nothing I'm unfamiliar with
  • Genre's ranging from classical all the way to heavy metal
  • In random order
I'm not quite sure why I do this . . . perhaps it's so that I don't over think the scene. Or I might be looking for some subconscious inspiration. I don't know.

Anyone else find themselves spinning tunes while writing? Why do you do it? (Or why don't you?)

  1. I can't write without music. If I'm writing at home, I'll have internet radio stations playing or my Windows Media Player spinning out a random concoction of tunes from my music library. If I'm at the cafe or library writing, I'll have my MP3 player blaring in my ears. I listen to everything from 80's music to Christian rock to dance/techno music.

  2. I used to listen to Tchaicovsky (sp?) and Star Trek bg music--but I really can't when I write because I get too caught up in the music.

  3. I tend to listen to music vaguely related (in weird free-association ways) to whatever I'm working on at the time. I also listen to DVDs, but only things that I'm already very familiar with, as they make good background noise.
